Three undertrial Nepali nationals lodged in Shimla’s Model Central Jail Kanda escaped by jumping the compounding wall in early morning hours, ANI reported on Wednesday. The undertrials were charged with murder and rape in different cases, police said. They have been identified as Leela Dhar (22), Pratab Singh (27) and Prem Bahadur (22).
Director General of Police (DGP) Somesh Goyal said that the three prisoners scaled the jail’s outer wall and escaped. He also admitted that it was a case of negligence by the staff posted that night inside the jail. A manhunt has been launched in the adjoining districts of Solan, Sirmaur and Bilaspur to nab the three convicts.
“We have sounded an alert in the adjoining districts of Solan, Sirmaur and Bilaspur to nab the accused. A case has also been registered at Boileau Ganj police station,” Goyal told The Indian Express.
This is the first instance of jailbreak in Kanda. So far no action has been taken against the jail authorities. In a similar incident, two militants and four gangsters broke out of the high-security Nabha Central Jail in November last year. Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) chief Harminder Singh Mintoo, another militant Kashmir Singh and four other gangsters had escaped from the jail on the morning of November 27 last year.
The inmates with the help of 15 other gangsters escaped from the jail after firing indiscriminately at the jail staff.
