New Delhi: Scientists have detected the presence of water on the metallic asteroid Psyche, said a recent study.

New observations from the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility in Hawaii showed evidence of water on the surface of the largest metallic asteroid in our solar system.

Previous observations had shown no evidence of water on Psyche that is made of almost pure nickel-iron metal, said the study.

Scientists propose possible mechanisms for the formation of Psyche asteroids as the source of the molecules on the asteroid remains a mystery.

Researchers from the University of Tennessee in the US are studying whether water-rich minerals detected on Psyche are delivered by carbonaceous asteroids that impacted the asteroid in the distant past.

Psyche is thought to be the remnant core of a budding planet that was mostly destroyed billions of years ago.
