Amidst the popularity of the ICC World T20 for men, the fifth edition of the ICC Women’s World T20 has been scheduled to be played from March 15 to April 3, 2016 in India. Out of the 10 teams playing in the tournament, top 8 teams namely India, Australia, South Africa, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and West Indies have qualified for the main round directly, while Bangladesh and Ireland have qualified on the basis of their performance in the 2015 World T20 qualifier. Both men and the women’s tournament are running simultaneously.
The 10 teams have been divided into 2 different groups. The champions Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Ireland, form part of Group A, while India, Pakistan, England, West Indies and Bangladesh have been placed in Group B. All the five teams in each group will play each other once. The team that wins would be awarded with 2 points, while in case of a draw, both the teams would be given 1 point each. If in case, two teams have equal number of wins at top in the table, their net run rates would be used to determine their progress card.
After the intra group matches, the top two teams from each group will reach the semi finals and the table-topper in Group A will face the second spot in Group B. Similarly, the leader in group B will play the second spotted team in Group A, to progress to the final.
Eden Gardens is the historical venue this year where both the men and the women’s final match would take place. The other matches would happen in eight cities namely New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Mohali, Nagpur and Dharamsala, betweeen the winners of Semi final 1 and 2.
