Mumbai: In a move that is expected to draw flak from fans but appreciation on humanitarian grounds, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Tuesday decided to move five matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2016 fixture out of Maharashtra.
According to sources, the BCCI has decided to move three matches from Nagpur to Mohali. The status of the other two matches remains unknown as of now.
The BCCI had drawn a lot of criticism from the Bombay High Court for being insensitive and ‘wasting’ water in IPL matches in a state that is suffering one of the worst droughts in recent times.
Over 15,000 villages in Maharastra have been severely affected by drought this year.
