Germany: Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola has taken a dig at Real Madrid’s star striker Cristiano Ronaldo saying he was ‘sorry’ that Real may have to face Bayern in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
Bayern drew 2-2 in Lisbon against Benfica which was enough to send the Bundesliga club through 3-2 on aggregate on Wednesday, while Madrid, riding on Cristiano’s hat-trick, trounced Wolfsburg.
Ronaldo, after his side’s win, had admitted that he would have ideally wanted the Portuguese team in the semis, but Guardiola joked that he was sad to crush the Blancos star’s dream.
“I know that Cristiano would have liked Benfica in the semi-finals, I am sorry for him,” the coach said to reporters after the game.
Guardiola won the Champions League silverware with Barcelona twice, but has fallen at the very last junctures in his two attempts as Bayern boss. When he took over, Bayern were the defending European champions.
The teams will find out their semi-final rivals on Friday when the Champions League 2016 semi-final clashes are drawn. For all the latest Sports News, download NewsX App
