Rajkot: Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja struck crucial blows initially but the England team managed to score 311/4 in their first innings on day one of first Test at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot.

After initial breakthroughs by Ashwin and Jadeja, the England squad while riding on Joe Root’s 124 and Moeen Ali 99, were able to put up a decent total of 311/4 at the end of day one.

Earlier, electing to bat on winning the toss, England were off to a steady start with the opening duo of captain Alistair Cook and debutant Haseeb Hameed batting cautiously.

Cook was lucky to survive in the first over when he edged a Mohammed Shami delivery to the slips only to see Ajinkya Rahane drop a relatively easy chance.
The 19-year-old Hameed, the youngest opener to debut for England, hit six boundaries during his 82-ball 31 before being trapped leg before after misjudging the turn of an Ashwin delivery.
India are the top ranked team in the world while England are in the fourth place.
