Melbourne: World No. 2 Serena Williams defeated sister Venus Williams 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday to win her seventh Australian Open title at the Rod Laver Arena on Saturday.
The 35-year-old American is now the most decorated Grand Slam winner after claiming her 23rd major singles title, which is the most of any player in the open era.
For the Williams sisters, it was their ninth meeting in a Grand Slam final, second in the Australian Open and 28th in total.
“Congratulations Serena on number 23,” said Venus after Serena’s historic victory.
Serena ended another chapter in their great sister rivalry as she now leads the head to head count 17-11.
“I’m enormously proud of you. You mean the world to me. I, God willing, would love to come back. Thank you for all the love,” said Venus.
Serena was equally gracious in her reply to her sister and said, “There’s no way I would be at 23 without her. There’s no way I’d be at one without her. She’s my inspiration.”
With this triumph, Serena Williams has regained the throne of being World No.1 player in the women’s ATP rankings.
She has also raced past tennis legend Steffi Graf in the all-time list of major winners.
