Spanish striker Edgar Mendez sealed Deportivo Alaves’ ticket to their first ever Copa del Rey final on Thursday after his late goal secured a 1-0 aggregate win against Celta Vigo at a packed Mendizorrotza stadium in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain.

Alaves turned out to be the better side after 0-0 draw in last week’s first leg against Celta Vigo at Balaidos stadium.

“We’re going to enjoy tonight and we’ll try to go for glory in May but we’ve already made history,” Alaves captain Manu Garcia said in a statement.

Alaves’ only biggest success came in the year 2001 when they contested UEFA Cup Final against Liverpool.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men are now destined to face the Catalan giants Barcelona in this year’s Copa del Rey final.

Earlier, Barcelona achieved another Copa del Rey final spot after a soul-stirring 1-1 draw in the second leg with Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou.
