Left-arm spinner Steve O’Keefe’s career-best six-wicket haul and skipper Steve Smith’s half century helped Australia take a commanding lead of 298 runs over India at stumps on the second day of the opening cricket Test on Friday.

In the Australian second innings, Smith, who was dropped thrice on 23, 29 and 37, was unbeaten on 59 with all-rounder Mitchell Marsh giving him company on 21.

Driven by a spectacular bowling performance of 06/35 from Steve O’Keefe’s, Australia bowled out India bundled for 105 runs in the first innings on the second day of the first cricket Test at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, in Pune.

Resuming the post-lunch session at 70/3, the Indian batsmen never looked in contention as they lost their remaining seven wickets for just 35 runs.

Apart from O’Keefe, pacer Mitchell Starc scalped two wickets for 38 runs while Jose Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon took a wicket each.

Earlier in the morning, resuming their innings at 256 for 9, Australia were bowled out in the first over, adding only four runs to their overnight score. Pacer Mitchell Starc, who played a valiant inning yesterday could not continue the lime run and was caught at deep-wicket off Ashwin’s bowling.

The pick of the bowler was Umesh Yadav, who scripted Australia’s downfall with figures of 4/32, while the spin trio of Ravichandran Ashwin (3/63), Ravindra Jadeja (2/74) and Jayant Yadav (1/58) shared five wickets between themselves as the visitors lost five wickets for just 56 runs in the third session.

Spinners are making the ball dance at will. After O’Keefe’s showdown of 6/35, Ashwin joins the party with two wickets in a quick succession. This last session of Day 2 will be very crucial to determine the outcome of the match and the series. For now its advantage Australia.
