Former India cricketer and Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) senior team selector Amit Bhandari was attacked by some unidentified assailants in New Delhi’s Kashmiri Gate area. The reports suggest that the incident happened at the St Stephen’s Cricket Ground, where selection trials for the Delhi Under-23 team were going on. The attackers reportedly attacked Amit Bhandari with iron rods and hockey sticks, after which he was admitted to the Sant Parmanand Hospital hospital. A few hours later, the doctors told the media that he has received some injuries but he is out of danger.
The co-selector Sukhvinder Singh said that the media assailants fled from the crime spot before police could arrive. He added that they will file an FIR. A DDCA official said that the attack presumed to be by one of the disgruntled players whose name was missing from the list of probable. We are still waiting for more details on the issue. He added that the sports authority will register an FIR and the culprits won’t be spared.
Taking cognizance of the matter, Delhi Police DCP North N Prasad said that the police has received the information that one rejected candidate came to Amit Bhandari to ask why he didn’t get selected and then hit him with stick and hands. Bhandari is in the hospital right now.
