World champion Saikhom Mirabai Chanu squared off the proceedings in spectacular fashion for India claiming the first gold medal on day 1 of the 21st edition of the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast Australia. Chanu set a Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games record while competing in the 48 kg category. She lifted a humongous 196 kg in snatch and clean jerk combined to bag the first gold medal for India after Gururaja Poojary opened India’s medal account with a silver in the 56 kg men’s weightlifting. Both the weightlifter put up a brilliant effort closing the day for India with two medals in the sport.
Chanu started off with an 80kg 84kg and 86kg in snatch, while she lifted double her body weight in the clean and jerk when she posted 103kg, 107kg and 110kg. She bettered her medal colour from 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow where she had won silver. Meanwhile, Gururaja lifted second best 249 kg to claim silver in the men’s 56 kg event. Indian badminton team also rose up to their reputation in Gold Coast as they outclassed Sri Lanka and Pakistan in the mixed team events. Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth both defeated their respective opponents in straight sets.
India’s strongest medal contender in boxing, Manoj Kumar progressed into the round of 16 after winning his opening match in the 69 kg category. Kumar won gold at the Commonwealth Games 2010 in New Delhi. India also had a fair share of losses on the first day at Gold Coast as the women’s hockey team lost 3-2 to Wales. Meanwhile, Raja Muthupandi failed to make it three medals in weightlifting as he finished sixth in the overall standings.

5:20 PM: Badminton: Ashwini Ponappa and Ruthvika Gadde have won their women’s doubles tie against Pakistan to register a 5-0 clean sweep in the mixed badminton event in on day 1 of the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast. India have won both their mixed badminton clashes against Pakistan and Sri Lanka 5-0.
5:10 PM: Table tennis: India beat Ireland 3-0. Sathiyan and Sharath Kamal won respectively in singles. Sathiyan-Harmeet won their doubles match.
5:00 PM: Weightlifting: Raja Muthupandi Finishes 6th in overall standings without any medal
4:55 PM: Badminton: 21-9, 21-15 Pranav and Chirag make it 4-0 for India against Pakistan. Superb show by Pranav and Chirag who wrap up the match in 26 minutes to put India 4-0 ahead of Pak. Earlier Saina and Srikanth won their respective matches in straight sets.
4:35 PM: Badminton: Pranav and Chirag are leading the first set 11-6 in the men’s doubles match against Pakistan’s Irfan Bhatti and Murad Ali.
4:23 PM: Badminton: Saina Nehwal has won the women’s singles encounter against Pakistan’s Mahoor Shahzad in straight sets 21-7, 21-11. The Indian ace never let Shahzad come into the game and absolutely terrorised her with her sensational attacking prowess. Next up Chirag Shetty and Pranav Chopra will contest in the men’s doubles against Irfan Bhatti and Murad Ali.
4:20 PM: Basketball: Jamaica have defeated India 57-66 in women’s Preliminary Round Pool B match. Boxing: Indian boxer Manoj Kumar has progressed into the round of 16 after winning his opening match in the 69 kg category. Kumar won gold at the Commonwealth Games 2010 in New Delhi.
4:15 PM: Badminton: Saina Nehwal is making sure that PV Sindhu is not being missed here. She is just 6 points away from clinching the second set which will put India 3-0 ahead against Pakistan.
4:05 PM: Badminton: Saina Nehwal has won the first set against Pakistan’s Mahoor Shahzad in spectacular fashion. The Indian outclassed her opponent 21-7 to put India in cruise control in the badminton encounter against Pakistan.
3:55 PM: Badminton: Saina Nehwal is playing absolutely ruthless badminton against Shahzad. The Pakistani shuttler is currently trailing 9-1 to the Indian as Saina is comfortably running away with the first set. It should be an easy win for the veteran Indian.

3:40 PM: Squash: Vikram Malhotra with a 3-0 victory over Mauritius’ Xavier Koenig has progressed into the round of 16 of men’s singles squash.
3:35 PM: Badminton: After claiming the first set, Srikanth took cruise control of the second game against Murad Ali taking a 4-1 lead but the Pakistan shuttler bounced back strongly to level the score at 7-7. Srikanth is not having it easy against him.
3:33 PM: Weightlifting: Raja has failed to put up an impact performance in his category, he is unlikely to win a medal and will have to put up a spectacular show in the clean and jerk to claim a medal.
3:30 PM: Badminton: In a hard first game, Kidambi Srikanth outclassed Ali 21-16 to clinch the set and get in a comfortable position to make it 2-0 for India after Satwik Rankireddy and N Sikki Reddy had won the opener.
3:20 PM: Badminton: Kidambi Srikanth had earlier floored Sri Lanka’s Niluka Karunaratne 21-16, 21-10 in India’s first men’s singles match is looking in control of his second match of the day against his Pakistani opponent.
3: 15 PM: Badminton: Kidambi Srikanth is currently engaged in an intense tussle with Pakistan’s Murad Ali in the men’s singles category. Satwik Rankireddy and N Sikki Reddy have won their opener against Pakistan 21-10, 21-13 . Meanwhile, the Indian Olympics Association have expressed delight on a good first day for the country in Gold Coast and have said that the medal tally will only rise in the upcoming days.

9:20 AM: Swimmer Virdhawal Khade got his ticket to the semi-finals in the men’s 50-metre butterfly at Gold Coast. Virdhawal Khade was alongside his counterpart Sajan Prakash, in Heat 5 at the Optus Aquatic Centre improved his sluggish start to finish fifth. Khade, who was in lane 6 got the fifth spot after being clocked at 24.52 seconds.
9:10 AM: In men’s table tennis action, Harmeet Desai and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran defeated Trinidad and Tobago’s Yuvraaj Dookram and Aaron Wilson. The India duo got the better of Trinidad and Tobago team with 11-9, 11-4, 11-4 scoreline.

8:55 AM: Table Tennis — For the final match, Sutirtha joined forces with Pooja Sahasrabudhe to beat Badu and Hansani Kapugeekiyana in the doubles action. With the win, India completed their 3-0 moulding of Sri Lanka in the women’s table tennis competition in the 2018 Commonwealth Game at Gold Coast.
8:50 AM: Table Tennis — After Manika Batra exploits, Sutirtha Mukherjee doubled India’s lead over the Sri Lankan women team with 11-5, 11-8, 11-4 scoreline. Mukherjee defeated Sri Lanka’s Ishara Badu in the second singles tie.

8:40 AM: Swimming — The 17-year old promising lad has set a national record here at Gold Coast in the 50m backstroke. Srihari Nataraj was clocked 56.71 in the 50m backstroke in the 2018 Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast.
8:35 AM: Swimming — In swimming, Srihari Nataraj has been making waves as the 17-year advanced to 50m backstroke semis. Nataraj who bagged all three backstroke events last year at the Senior Nationals turned out as the 15th fastest qualifier.
8:30 AM: Badminton — Following the footsteps of Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth, who decimated their opponents with ease, Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy eclipsed Thilini Pramodika Hendahewa and Kavidi Sirimannage to complete the Sri Lankan whitewash at Gold Coast.

7:50 AM: Weightlifting — Gururaja lifted his level best weight of 111kg before adding 138kg in his third attempt to register a total lift of 249kg. Gururaja began weightlifting back in 2010 and is the son of a pickup-truck driver. The silver medallist at gold Coast comes from Kundapura in coastal Karnataka. The 25-year old clinched gold at the South Asian Games in 2016 and also won gold in Commonwealth senior weightlifting championship.
