Manchester United fought back from one goal down to beat CSKA Moscow 2-1 in the Champions League group clash on Wednesday. Jose Mourinho’s men with the victory ensured they finish on top in Group A. The victorious United side marked the return of Luke Shaw who impressed the manager and the fans with his gritty display cementing his chances in the side. The English left-back was on point as he de-coded challenges from the Moscow forwards and came close to a goal in the first half. Shaw was starting for the first time this season and he made the most of the opportunity by putting up a phenomenal display on the pitch which convinced Mourinho of giving him more minutes in future.
The Belgian star striker Romelu Lukaku also earned praise for his brilliant performance against CSKA Moscow. The striker netted his first goal in the Champions League since September to convert a flyer from Paul Pogba. Lukaku outweighed the defender as he caught hold of Pogba’s delivery to put forth an amazing finish and level the score for Manchester United. CSKA were the first to score as they capitalised on defensive blunders by United. Mourinho yet again didn’t hold back from showering his praise on Lukkau who has perfectly fit into his strategy of football, both defensively and attacking. “I am always happy with Romelu, the way he plays for the team is amazing. It is great when he can feel that happiness strikers have when they score. But he is always involved and working for the team. Of course, to score a goal in the Champions League makes me feel happy for him. Not for me, but for him,” said Mourinho.
For Luke Shaw, it was a great game to make a return after playing quite a while for the Manchester United reserves and the U23s. The former Southampton player had been under his manager’s scrutiny for not showing proper intent in his recovery. However, now it seems Mourinho was convinced that the genuine left back can add more quality to his backline. Shaw was also voted as the Man of the Match in his very first game of the season. “Shaw put in a very positive performance, especially in possession,” he told a news conference. “He created a lot of danger and created a lot of dangerous situations. It was no surprise that he was feeling it toward the end. He deserved a chance and he will get more chances in the future,” reckoned Mourinho who will now take a sigh of relief after injury blows to major defenders.
