It’s the time of the year when performances of footballers are assessed and the outstanding candidates are awarded medals and honours. Among the host of awards, one which draws much anticipation from fans and footballers themselves is FIFA Puskas Award. Puskas is awarded to a player who has scored the most beautiful goal in the entire footballing calendar year. Triumphing at the Puskas gala in Switzerland is not so easy as football witnesses thousands of goal in a year and to score the most aesthetically moving goal requires an incredible mix of skill, timing and execution.
Puskas Award was established in the honour of legendary Real Madrid striker Ferenc Puskas. The first recipient of the award in 2009 was Cristiano Ronaldo who scored rocket of a goal from long range against Porto in 2008-09 Champions League. Hamit Altıntop, Neymar, Miroslav Stoch, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, James Rodríguez, Wendell Lira and Mohd Faiz Subri have gone on to collect the award in following years.
After FIFA announced the list of 10 nominees for the prestigious award earlier in September, three finalists were concluded on October 9 post the first round of voting.
