What AI Assistants Are Actually Built To Do?
Tools like Google’s Gemini, Apple’s Siri, and Samsung’s Bixby are built for everyday stuff: summarising notifications, drafting a quick reply, setting a reminder. To do any of that properly, they usually need a brief look at your messages, just enough to understand the context and come back with something useful.

What actually matters is how that data gets handled afterward. With a legitimate AI feature, your messages get processed either on your device or through a secure server, just long enough to complete the task you asked for, like summarising a conversation or suggesting your next line. They’re not supposed to hold onto a permanent copy of your chats or pass them on to advertisers. Apple has said more than once that a good chunk of its AI processing happens directly on the device, meaning far less data actually leaves your phone than most people assume.
Permissions Matter More Than You Think
A lot of this comes down to permissions you’ve already granted. If an app can read your notifications or access your messages, its AI features can see that content too, by default. That’s why it’s worth going through your app permissions every so often instead of assuming every assistant works the same way.

Not in the dramatic way people tend to picture it. But it’s not fully hands-off either. The more useful you want your AI assistant to be, the more access it tends to ask for. The real fix isn’t swearing off AI features altogether, it’s staying aware of what you’ve allowed and being a bit more careful about which apps get to touch your assistant’s more personal capabilities.
