Typhoon Nanmadol made its landfall, battering the main southwest island of Kyushu part of western Japan. 70 people got injured while two were reported dead. Typhoon Nanmadol made its landfall in Kagoshima Prefecture and was approaching the city of Fukuoka at the speed of 126 km per hour on Monday.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, the prime minister, postponed his flight to New York, where he is scheduled to address the U.N. General Assembly.
“I postponed my scheduled departure from today to take stock of the damage caused by the typhoon and to take all possible measures for recovery,” told Kishida to the reporters on Monday. “Circumstances permitting, I will leave tomorrow morning”, he added.
As Typhoon Nanmadol moves northeast along a path that would take it around the west coast of the main island of Honshu, the meteorological agency predicted that it will drop as much as 400 millimeters of rain in some areas of the region.
The meteorological agency said that the storm is projected to dump heavy rain on Honshu that may lead to floods and landslides in the city.
A flood advisory for Tokyo and the adjacent Kanagawa Region was issued by Japan’s meteorological agency while parts of Kyushu and the northeast were already under a flood warning.
“We need to remain highly vigilant for heavy rains, gales, high waves, and storm surges,” a Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) official said at a news conference.
The trade ministry said that 3,40,000 ho in Kyushu had no any electricity on Monday due to the storm whereas 800 flights were canceled. Most schools remained closed in the light of the typhoon and a public holiday on Monday.
