Taking place in Bengaluru, a northeast student hailing from Arunachal Pradesh was severely beaten by his landlord for allegedly overusing the water in his house. The racial attack took place on March 6.

Higio Guntey is a fourth semester student of Christ College University in Bengaluru. Guntey’s father is the Executive Assistant Commissioner of Arunachal Pradesh. His landlord, who was enraged at him for using extra water in the building, repeatedly thrashed him and forced him to lick his shoe.

Guntey was verbally abused by his landlord over the phone following which the intoxicated landlord entered his house and started beating him. “After beating me black and blue, he still was not satisfied. He beat me again and forced me to put on his shoes and made me lick and kiss them. I had to oblige because I was bruised and was not in a position to take any more beatings. As if this was not enough, he kicked me out of the house. He even threw my trolley from the third floor. This is very humiliating”, Guntey said.

The President of the Arunachal Pradesh Student Association said that the landlord had also beaten other northeastern students. He said that if the neighbours in the vicinity had not intervened, Guntey would’ve suffered serious injuries.

Guntey also alleges that the police were lackadaisical in taking his complaint and did not take appropriate action against the accused. The landlord, who was initially arrested, has now been released on anticipatory bail.
