Rajnath Singh Lays Wreath at National War Memorial on Occasion of Vijay Diwas

In honour of Vijay Diwas and India's triumph over Pakistan in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh lay a wreath at the National War Memorial on Friday.

General Anil Chauhan, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Manoj Pande, the Chief of the Air Staff (Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari), and Vice Admiral SN Ghormade, the Vice Chief of the Indian Navy, also placed wreaths at the National War Memorial earlier.

The Pakistan Army’s 93,000 soldiers surrendered to the Indian forces on that day fifty years ago, marking the largest military surrender since the end of World War II and the independence of Bangladesh, previously East Pakistan.

On the occasion of Vijay Diwas, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar paid respect to those who sacrificed their lives while serving the country on Friday.

“I join the country in honouring our armed services’ valour and sacrifice on Vijay Diwas, which helped us win the 1971 war. I honour the martyrs who gave their lives in defence of our country. #VijayDiwas2022, “The Vice President tweeted.

Every year, the day is celebrated as “Vijay Diwas” to honour the Indian forces’ triumph.

Lt Gen Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, the head of East Pakistan’s martial law regime and the commander of the Pakistan Army stationed there, signed the Instrument of Surrender on December 16.
