Lagos: At least seven people were killed and 17 others injured in a road accident along Lagos-Ore-Benin Expressway in Nigeria’s Ogun state, authorities said on Monday.
Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Adegoke Adetunji told Xinhua that the driver of a Toyota Hummer bus lost control of the vehicle which veered off its lane and jumped the median before crashing into another bus travelling in the opposite direction.
The FRSC chief also added that those rescued alive had been taken to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu for medical attention.
He said the bodies of the deceased had been deposited at the morgue of the same hospital.
The commander further said that it took the combined efforts of officers from his corps, the police as well as those of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency to clear the expressway to prevent another road crash as well as traffic gridlock in the area.
Nigeria records high fatality rates for road accidents mainly due to shoddy highways, poorly-maintained vehicles and violation of traffic rules by inept drivers.
