PESHAWAR: 10 innocent worshippers have been killed and more than 40 are injured after unidentified militants attacked a Shia mosque at the time of prayers in Peshawar, Pakistan on Friday.
The mosque became the target in the Hayatabad area of Peshawar, capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. At least three explosions and gunfire were heard, the reports suggest and the nature of the explosions is yet to be discovered.
According to the reports, some militants are still in the mosque, exchanging fire with security forces.
A group of armed men, reportedly in security personnel uniforms broke into the mosque and opened fire where the people were attending Friday prayers, police said.
The hospitals in the nearby area have been put on high alert.
Imran Khan of the opposition party in his tweet stated he was stopped from visiting the site by the security people.
The attack is a reminiscent of the December 16 Peshawar school carnage last year that killed at least 150 people including 136 students.
Apart from this, 61 people including children were killed last month after a suicide bombing took place during the Friday prayers at a packed minority Shia mosque in Sindh region of Pakistan.
