Several of the staff members of a hospital on Wednesday were held hostage by a gunman in Istanbul, Turkish media reported.

But the local authorities have released a statement saying that the situation is now under control and the hospital staff has been evacuated from the premises safely.

Reportedly, the gunman is believed to be a police officer himself who was receiving treatment in the psychiatric section of Cerrahpasa Hospital in Istanbul.

After the initial reports of hostage situation in the hospital, the authorities further clarified that the man took out his gun in the hospital and threatened to kill himself.

A similar incident took place in mid-January, where Turkish farmers took a ‘minister’ hostage in his office over unpaid compensation.
