China sanctions US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, says Chinese Foreign Ministry

A Chinese Foreign Ministry statement said Friday that Pelosi had disregarded China’s worries and resolute opposition to her visit to the self-ruled island, which Beijing claims.

China imposed sanctions against U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for her visit earlier to Taiwan. A Chinese Foreign Ministry statement said Friday that Pelosi had disregarded China’s worries and resolute opposition to her visit to the self-ruled island, which Beijing claims.

Pelosi traveled to Taipei unannounced on Tuesday evening, disregarding a barrage of warnings from China, which considers the self-governing island as its own territory. According to a Chinese statement, Pelosi’s visit is provocative and undermines China’s territorial integrity. It stated that Pelosi and her immediate family would face sanctions, but it did not specify what those consequences would be.

Soon after news leaked on Monday that Pelosi would touch down on Taiwan, China responded with unprecedented military exercises in the Taiwan Strait.

China sent 22 warplanes into ADIZ on Thursday.
