Dimitry Rogozin, director general of the state-run space agency Roscosmos, and Maxim Oreshkin, Minister for economic development in Russia will hold up important talks for enhanced cooperation in space and trade ties between the two countries. Their visit to India is being seen as preparing a smooth ground and setting up the agenda, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Vladivostok in September this year.
PM Narendra Modi will be heading to Russia’s Vladivostok in September to attend the East Economic Forum meet. President Putin had formally extended the invitation to PM Modi during their SCO meet in Bishkek this year. Putin has invited Modi as a main guest to the Eastern Economic Forum meet in Vladivostok. PM Modi will also be holding the annual bilateral summit with the Russian President post the business meeting.
Recently, India collaborated with a Russian company Glavkosmos for the space training of Indian astronauts under the ‘Gaganyaan’ space mission. The contract was signed between the Russian firm and ISRO, where Glavkosmos will be providing training and assistance on a consultancy basis to the Indian Astronauts. This is being seen as a positive step in the direction of enhanced cooperation in space.
Apart from this, both countries are expected to explore opportunities for strengthening bilateral trade and investments. On the strategic and defense front, Russia has been one of India’s key arms and ammunition suppliers. India has already finalized the S-400 air defense missile system deal with Russia and hence better engagement in the strategic domain is also expected in the near future.
