Taliban grossly violated Doha agreement by sheltering Al-Qaeda chief: says Blinken

According to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday, by housing and protecting Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, Taliban have flagrantly breached the terms of the Doha Agreement.

Zawahiri was killed by an American airstrike on Saturday, according to President Joe Biden. “The Taliban blatantly breached the Doha Agreement and repeated guarantees to the world that they would not allow Afghan territory to be exploited by terrorists to harm the security of other nations by harboring and hiding the head of Al-Qaeda in Kabul,” Blinken said in a statement.

Under the administration of former US President Donald Trump, US and Taliban signed peace accord in February 2020.

According to the agreement, US soldiers would leave Afghanistan and the Taliban behind, which would reduce bloodshed and ensure that terrorists wouldn’t have a safe haven there.

In a video speech, Biden made a statement from the White House’s Blue Room Balcony, “The emir of al-Qa’ida, Ayman al-Zawahiri, was fatally struck by an American bombing on Saturday in Kabul, Afghanistan, which was carried out on my orders. This terrorist leader has been removed from power after justice was served.”

“Since he is no longer with us, we will make sure that nothing else occurs. He will never again, never again, let Afghanistan become a terrorist safe haven,” he continued.

In addition to playing a key role in the planning of 9/11, Zawahiri, an Egyptian surgeon, served as Osama Bin Laden’s personal doctor.
