Former Treasury Secretary Rishi Sunak and his rival Foreign Secretary Liz Truss are putting up all of their efforts to gather the support of members of the ruling Conservative party as the race for United Kingdom’s leadership heats up.

On Thursday, July 28, both candidates presented their respective leadership ideologies in Leed during the contentious debate and their first official grilling in front of conservative party members, who will finally decide the winner.

The front-runner to succeed Boris Johnson, 42-year-old Sunak, has positioned himself as the underdog in the battle for the Conservative Party’s leadership. Even though Conservative party polls show Truss to be comfortably ahead in the contest, the former chancellor has vowed to “fight for every vote.”

Sunak has also focused on the delicate issue of immigration in an effort to win over Conservative Party voters by promising a “healthy dose of common sense” approach. If elected, he has also provided a 10-point plan for safeguarding the nation’s borders. Truss has promised to introduce an emergency budget in the meanwhile in order to drastically reduce taxes in the nation.

Notably, a new prime minister is most likely to be appointed by September 5 at the latest.
