In a major move which has triggered a shock signal in the Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the name of former state unit chief K. Annamalai is missing in the first list of candidates announced by the party for the 2026 Assembly elections. But why?
The absence is especially significant since Annamalai has been the face of the party in the state for the past few years.
The BJP, which is contesting the election under the banner of the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance, has been allocated only 27 seats in the state’s total 234 Assembly constituencies.
The party has announced the names of many senior leaders, including Union Minister L. Murugan, state unit chief Nainar Nagendran, and former Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan. However, the focus is on the absence of Annamalai, who has been at the core of the BJP’s expansion efforts in the state.
The core issue here is the seat-sharing arrangement between the BJP and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). Sources indicate that the allocation of only 27 seats has not been well received by many leaders, especially Annamalai, who is understood to have been “extremely upset” with the deal.
The small number of seats has clearly limited the party’s ability to accommodate many key leaders. In the case of Annamalai, who has been instrumental in expanding the BJP presence in Tamil Nadu, the seat-sharing deal seems to have been a major disappointment for the party, thus creating discontent among the members.
The flashpoint in the relationship was the allocation of the Coimbatore seat, particularly the Coimbatore North constituency. It is alleged that both Annamalai and Vanathi Srinivasan, a senior BJP leader, were eying the seat. The situation was stuck in a deadlock.
Despite efforts from the central leadership, including Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister, the situation could not be resolved amicably. Ultimately, the seat was given to Vanathi Srinivasan, which meant that Annamalai was left without a seat.
The situation was further worsened by the fact that the BJP was not able to win other key seats such as Singanallur and Kavundampalayam. These seats were winnable for Annamalai, which further added to the tension.
The incident has also focused attention on reports of a rift between Annamalai and state BJP president Nainar Nagendran. Though there has been no official word from the party on internal conflicts, it is believed by political analysts that a rift between Nagendran and Annamalai could be a reason for his absence from the list of candidates.
Nagendran, who now leads the BJP in the state, has been given the task of leading the party through the Assembly elections. This has naturally sparked a theory of a change in leadership styles leading to his marginalisation.
The political intrigue around Annamalai has increased manifold over the past few days. For instance, it was found that Annamalai skipped receiving Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Coimbatore. Although he was present in Coimbatore during that time and was scheduled to receive the Prime Minister, Annamalai skipped it. This has been seen as a political move.
According to sources, Annamalai was not interested in fighting the elections as he was not given a suitable seat. He was also found to have backed out from campaigning for the party, indicating his discontent.
The unrest within the party is not just at the higher levels. For example, it was found that there were instances of protests from BJP cadres in parts of Tamil Nadu. The cadres were reportedly upset with the party’s moves. The cadres have been found to have confronted their higher party functionaries.
This shows that there are organisational challenges for the BJP. The BJP has been trying to increase its presence in a region that has largely been dominated by Dravidian parties.
The exclusion comes at a critical moment, especially when the BJP is trying to make its presence felt in the state. Annamalai’s exclusion could affect the party’s current momentum, especially since he has been a vocal and aggressive face for the party.
Furthermore, the exclusion has raised rumors about the BJP-AIADMK alliance. While the two parties have been claiming to be on the same page, the tension between them on the issue of seat sharing and leadership selection is evident.
The exclusion has raised many questions about Annamalai’s future in the party. Annamalai was once the face of the BJP in the state, but the recent exclusion from the party candidate list, starting from the exclusion from the state president position, has raised many doubts.
As the election campaign is heating up, all eyes are on how the BJP deals with this fallout. Whether Annamalai is able to patch up with the party leadership and play an active role in the election campaign, or whether there is a widening rift between him and the party, remains to be seen, but could have a big impact on the party’s prospects.
For now, his absence has turned a routine announcement of a candidate into a big political issue, which reflects the problems faced by the BJP in Tamil Nadu.
