MeToo Case Quashed: Meesha Shafi Asked By Pakistani Court To Pay Rs5 million In Damages To Ali Zafar Over Defamation – Why This Ruling Matters For Men

Ali Zafar, the Pakistani singer and actor, has achieved an important victory related to the long-standing issue of #MeToo allegations made by another artist, Meesha Shafi. The court in Lahore ruled in favor of Ali Zafar, ordering Meesha Shafi to pay damages to Zafar. This is a milestone in what may be one of Pakistan’s most publicized legal battles between two well-known personalities.

The case began in 2018 when Meesha Shafi made a public accusation of sexual harassment against Ali Zafar, which sparked the #MeToo movement and ignited a heated public debate throughout Pakistan. Zafar denied the allegations made against him and subsequently filed a defamation lawsuit claiming that Shafi’s accusations significantly harmed both his reputation and his career.

Court Rules In Favour Of Ali Zafar

In making its final ruling, the Court in Lahore ruled that there was insufficient proof of the allegations made against Ali Zafar in order to sustain a defamation claim against him. As a result, the Court ordered Meesha Shafi to pay Ali Zafar pay damages of 5 million Pakistani rupees (approximately $17,900) due to the damage that she had done to his reputation.

The legal ruling that went against his accuser seems to substantiate Zafar’s position in this #MeToo issue and end a long legal dispute concerning his prestige and reputation as a result of false claims made against him by Shafi and her supporters. Zafar’s lawyers argued that these false allegations not only resulted in damage to his professional reputation but also hurt his social standing and personal life. Zafar had previously indicated that he was seeking restitution of up to 1 billion rupees ($8.25 million) for the damage caused to him by the statements and actions of Shafi.

Allegations of Sexual Misconduct #MeToo Against Ali Zafar

The allegations first came to light when Shafi publicly accused Zafar of sexually assaulting her on social media in April 2018. This was followed by additional similar reports of sexual assault against Zafar by Shafi (as well as Shafi’s supporters). The allegations attracted much attention and became one of the most highly-publicized cases of sexual harassment in the entertainment industry of Pakistan.

Zafar immediately categorically denied the veracity of the accusations made against him and filed a lawsuit against Shafi shortly thereafter. Zafar maintained that the allegations made by Shafi and other women were false, defamatory, and made with the intent of damaging his reputation and integrity.

Years Long Legal Proceedings In The Case Of Meesha Shafi And Ali Zafar

Zafar was subjected to years of extensive legal proceedings related to the allegations made against him.
Both sides provided testimony, introduced numerous documents, and presented witnesses as evidence to support their respective claims throughout the various stages of litigation. In one hearing, nine witnesses, according to reports, testified that Shafi was lying.

Simultaneously, both women filed their own defamation lawsuits against each other, with Zafar seeking damages for loss of reputation while Shafi did the same; indicating the level to which this dispute became contested.

Impact On Pakistan’s #MeToo Movement

This case was a pivotal moment for #MeToo in Pakistan, due to sparking discussions about harassment laws, defamation and the obstacles faced by people who speak out. Many activists feared that the legal battles would discourage victims from coming forward.

At the same time, this case exposed flaws in Pakistan’s justice system. Shafi’s initial complaint was thrown out by the courts based on a technicality because no employer/employee relationship existed between the two; raising the question of how existing harassment laws are structured.
