Comedian Sunil Pal has spoken out after an uncomfortable moment at a recent Mumbai event left him feeling disrespected. What began as a pleasant evening among poets and performers quickly turned awkward when he was invited on stage, honoured with a bouquet, but not allowed to speak.

A video from the event has now gone viral, showing Pal being called on stage during what he described as an Urdu-Arab shayari programme. Recalling the evening, Pal shared that he had attended the event at the invitation of a close friend and was genuinely enjoying the atmosphere.

“Ye ek shayari ka program tha jisme main gaya tha. Many good shayars had come to this Urdu-Arab event. One of my closest friends had invited me to this event so I went and was having a good time,” he told News18.

Things took a turn when he was invited on stage as part of what appeared to be a gesture of respect. According to Pal, he was happy to be acknowledged and simply wanted to express his gratitude.

“Then they invited me to the stage and handed me a bouquet. Since it was a very good event with amazing shayars, I wanted to say something. All I wanted to say was ‘thank you’ and appreciate the poets there. Unhe samman krna tha mujhe kyuki vo deserve karte hai,” he explained.

However, what followed left him both surprised and hurt. Pal revealed that despite repeatedly requesting the microphone, he was not allowed to address the audience.

“But the man standing there just refused to give the mic to me. I don’t know who he was but I asked so many times but he didn’t want me to speak at all,” he recalled.

In the viral clip, Pal can be seen politely insisting, “At least let me say thank you,” while the organiser appears to signal him to step down. The moment, captured on camera by several attendees, added to his discomfort.

“Everyone there was watching and recording the video of me on stage because they thought I was being honoured but look what happened. I felt insulted,” Pal said. Seeking clarity, the comedian later reached out to the friend who had invited him, hoping for an explanation. However, he was left with more confusion than answers.

“Later, I even asked my friend, who had invited me, what was the issue but he asked me to forget and move on. Even he didn’t know why I wasn’t allowed to say a simple thank you on stage,” he shared.

Deeply affected by the incident, Pal chose to leave the venue soon after. “I didn’t stay there anymore and simply walked away. Bhot hi galat hua mere sath,” he said.

The incident has since sparked strong reactions online, with many social media users expressing support for the comedian and criticising the organisers. What was meant to be a moment of recognition has now turned into a conversation about basic respect and stage etiquette.
