A 41-year-old Rajkot, Gujarat man named Sakriya Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai reportedly assaulted Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during her Wednesday morning Jan Sunwai public hearing at her Civil Lines camp office. The attack, which provoked serious security concerns, was reportedly the result of his annoyance over the recent Supreme Court ruling that instructed stray dogs in Delhi-NCR to be rounded up and relocated to shelters.
Sakriya is also a dog lover, his family said. His mother, Bhanu, explained in an interview to reporters, “My son loves dogs. He was angered by the Supreme Court’s ruling against stray dogs and went to Delhi shortly thereafter.”. We don’t know anything else.”
At the course of the session, Sakriya gave some papers to the Chief Minister before reportedly attempting to pull her hand, causing a moment of commotion. Security officers and onlookers quickly came in to make sure CM Gupta escaped unscathed. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva asserted she was “shaken” but unhurt, brushing aside reports that she was slapped.
The attack attracted broad-based condemnation across party lines. Former chief minister of Delhi Atishi condemned the attacks as “unacceptable” and called for accountability, while Minister for Environment Manjinder Singh Sirsa asserted, “She is worried about Delhi. This hurts her critics. I condemn the attack in the strongest terms.”
Sakriya Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai, aka Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakaria, is from Rajkot in Gujarat. Police reports say he had gone to the Chief Minister’s grievance hearing with papers about a relative jailed in Tihar Jail. Though some versions say perhaps he might have requested the CM’s help concerning the relative too, his family claims his main agenda was his fury at how stray dogs were being dealt with. Eyewitnesses told that Sakriya first greeted CM Gupta politely before reportedly becoming violent, pulling her hair and abusing her in words, till security officials stepped in.
