Who Is Ashok Mittal? LPU Founder And AAP MP Now Named Party’s Deputy Leader In Rajya Sabha, Replaces Raghav Chadha

Lovely Professional University’s founder Ashok Kumar Mittal has taken a more significant role in politics. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has appointed him as their new Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha to replace Raghav Chadha. It is a major shift in AAP’s overall strategy for parliament, particularly in terms of the Rajya Sabha.

Mittal has been a Rajya Sabha member since May 2022, representing Punjab, where he was already establishing himself as an essential player in AAP’s national leadership, coinciding with AAP’s aim to increase its presence in Parliament and grow their national presence.

Ashok Mittal: From educationist to key political face

In the education sector, Ashok Mittal is widely regarded as a leader. He is known for creating one of India’s largest private universities, Lovely Professional University, which is located in Punjab and serves thousands of students throughout India and the world. This has solidified his status in private higher education.

Mittal joined AAP and quickly rose through the ranks of the party. Once in the Rajya Sabha, he has mainly focused on education issues. 

The significance of the change to the AAP leadership for Ashok Mittal

Although Raghav Chadha’s removal as AAP vice president is oftentimes interpreted as being shifted down in status, it represents an adjustment of existing roles. The value of Raghav Chadha to AAP remains unchanged; he is still an integral member of the AAP leadership team and still has a great deal of value and importance to the Party.

Ashok Mittal will provide for the Party’s commitment to its objective to place qualified people into critical positions of Leadership; this will be in addition to a broader trend of individuals being appointed to Leadership positions who come from industries/companies outside of Politics and are appointed based on their professional experience and skill sets.

Responsibilities of Ashok Mittal in the Rajya Sabha

As the Vice Leader of the AAP in the Rajya Sabha, Mittal will work with the Party Leadership to implement the Party’s goals and agenda in the Rajya Sabha. He will lead the debates, maintain discipline of AAP and represent AAP on major issues of National importance.

This is a critical function of the role because the negotiations that take place in Parliament with other political parties will be directly influenced by the party in power (in this case, AAP) having sufficient numbers of MLAs to effectively negotiate on behalf of all Indians. This will require Mittal to work closely with the executive team of AAP to build greater political strength for AAP in Parliament.

Growing role of Ashok Mittal in national politics

A further indication of AAP’s political strength is illustrated through Mittal’s appointment, thereby demonstrating a growing network of AAP political leaders. AAP began as a regional force but is now focused on, and committed to, developing a robust national identity as a political party. The addition of someone like Mittal will help to further the development of AAP’s national identity through the addition of professional experience combined with a keen understanding of Indian politics.

He has extensive experience and knowledge of education reform, youth in India, and the necessary innovations required to provide an appropriate level of service to all of the citizens who are served through AAP).
