Jagdeep Dhankhar, a vice-presidential candidate for National Democratic Alliance (NDA), and Margaret Alva, a nominee for opposition, are the two contenders for the vice-presidential seat. Dhankhar submitted his nomination paperwork on July 18 at the Parliament House to the Returning Officer and Secretary General of the Lok Sabha.

When Dhankar submitted his candidacy, BJP president JP Nadda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and Nitin Gadkari were all there.

Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha members of India’s Electoral College pick the vice president, the second-highest constitutional position in the nation.

Dhankhar, an attorney by training, entered politics in 1989. In July 2019, he was appointed governor of West Bengal, and ever then, his contentious interactions with the Mamata Banerjee administration have garnered media attention. He submitted his letter of resignation as West Bengal’s governor.

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) declared on Wednesday that it will endorse Jagdeep Dhankhar of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the upcoming vice presidential elections.

Mayawati, the leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), had already declared her party’s support for Dhankhar.

Earlier on July 19, Alva submitted her nomination for the vice presidential race. On July 17, opposition groups resolved to run the former governor of Rajasthan for vice president as a joint candidate.

At a gathering of 17 opposition party leaders at the home of NCP supremo Sharad Pawar, the decision was made to field Alva.

Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) stated on Friday that it will endorse opposition vice presidential candidate Margaret Alva.

Venkaiah Naidu was put forth by the NDA in 2017 as its vice presidential candidate. His tenure ends on August 10, 2022.
