One of the most widely shared viral claims on social media in the recent past was a story over the death of the oldest known animal on Earth, Jonathan, which left many users shocked and concerned. The rumour, which appeared on April 1, implied that the 193-year-old tortoise died peacefully. The viral post was soon spread, and some users posted tributes and messages of mourning the death of the legendary animal. This claim, however, became questionable when its authenticity began to be questioned.
It was discovered that the viral post was a fake account on X, which impersonated a long time veterinarian of Jonathan. The account made a false post about the death of the tortoise and even tried to capitalize on the emotions of the people by telling them to donate to cryptocurrency. The trick is common with online frauds, where false information is propagated to provoke emotional response and donations. The authorities and officials in Saint Helena, where Jonathan lives, were prompt to take action in order to dispel the rumour. A spokesperson affirmed that Jonathan is still alive and healthy and the viral assertion is entirely false. The governor of the island also confirmed the status of the tortoise, which further gave the people an assurance that the rumors going round the internet were not factual.
Jonathan (who is thought to have been born circa 1832) is still an icon of ageing and strength all over the world. He is still living in a well attended house despite his old age, leading a fairly active life. The case illustrates the speed at which false information can go viral, particularly when it is about famous people or pets. Before believing or sharing such viral claims, experts recommend users to trust the sources that have been verified and official announcements.
