The South Korean military fired warning shots and scrambled warplanes on Monday after North Korean drones breached its airspace, according to Yonhap News Agency, citing authorities.

South Korea sent the warning signals, fired warning shots, and dispatched jets, attack helicopters, and other aeroplanes to remove them, according to the official, but it is unknown whether the vehicles are armed.

“We also identified them with our eyes,” South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) official told reporters on condition of anonymity. “An operation is still ongoing against the vehicles,” the official said.

Earlier, South Korea accused North Korea of flying “several” drones that crossed the Military Demarcation Line between the two countries, reported Yonhap News Agency.

South Korea’s military detected multiple “unidentified objects,” presumed to be unmanned aerial vehicles, in border areas of Gyeonggi Province from 10:25 am, according to an official at the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

According to Yonhap news agency, the North’s drone operations have raised security worries in the country since they may be used for spying as well as potential assault missions against the South.

The North’s latest breach of the South’s territorial airspace heightened tensions after it launched two short-range ballistic missiles on Friday.

The missiles were launched from Pyongyang’s Sunan area at roughly 4:32 p.m. local time, according to a statement issued by South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) on Friday.

It went on to say that the two missiles were fired into the seas between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.

North Korea is raising tensions by launching a record number of missiles in 2022. This is the 36th day this year that North Korea has fired missiles, frequently firing multiple weapons at once, according to CNN.

According to the Japan Coast Guard, a ballistic missile fell outside of Japan’s exclusive economic zone, citing intelligence from the country’s Ministry of Defense.

Under Kim Jong Un’s leadership, the isolated country has aggressively increased missile launches, with US and South Korean analysts warning that Pyongyang may be preparing for a nuclear test, the country’s first in more than five years.

CNN claimed earlier last year that satellite footage revealed activity at its underground nuclear test site.
