Chief selector Ajit Agarkar on August 19 unveiled India’s 15-member squad for the Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE. The event will take place in September 9 to 28 in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Suryakumar Yadav is still the captain and Shubman Gill as the vice-captain.
The fact that Gill has been made vice-captain all but confirms his inclusion in the playing XI of India in the continental tournament. In the press conference during the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, Agarkar was questioned on the Indian opening pair. He also dropped a hint that Abhishek Sharma will get a chance to open and his partner will be chosen by the captain and coach in Dubai.
“Gill and Sanju – two very good opening options to have alongside Abhishek Sharma. Captain & Coach will take the call after reaching Dubai,” Agarkar said when quizzed about India’s openers. His comments have created a speculation about who is going to replace him among the Sharma subordinates.
Having played his debut match in T20I against Zimbabwe on July 6, 2024, in Harare, Abhishek Sharma has an average of 39.30 with 511 runs in his stats including 2 centuries, and 2 fifties in 14 matches. His unbelievable strike rate of 199.60 and trustworthiness have made him an important pillar in the top order of India.
Sanju Samson, 30, has been no less good as an opener. He is a leading run-scorer with 522 runs in 17 T20Is with a strike rate of 178.76 and three centuries. He is an effective attacking choice with his game-turning style to play with Sharma.
Shubman Gill has played 21 T20Is as an opener with 578 runs and he has a century and three fifties. His reliable method and consistent strike rate of 139.27 give India a reliable and reliable option at the top of the order.
Sharma, Samson and Gill have already played openers in their respective IPL franchises this season and have also won matches with several match-winning innings. Their domestic avatar would only strengthen the case that selectors have more than one choice in mind, but the choice of the opening pair in the Asia Cup would most probably be made by the captain and the coach based on the conditions they find in Dubai.
As the Asia Cup is on the way, the opening pair of India is one of the major discussions. Agarkar has already hinted that Sharma is almost certain to open but the Men in Blue will have a dynamic option in his partner and the top of the order can be a match winning asset.
