Delhi Capitals overcame an early wobble to register a comfortable victory eventually over the Delhi Capitals on April 1, Wednesday at the Ekana International Stadium in IPL 2026. Chasing a mere 142, LSG pacers made the tourists work hard for their runs but it wasn’t even the closest match witnessed in the ten-team tournament thus far as Sameer Rizvi’s 70 played a brilliant rescue act.
The opening combination of Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram was one of the few silver linings that the Super Giants had after failing to reach the playoffs for the second consecutive occasion. However, Markram was pushed down the order as LSG decided to experiment with Rishabh Pant as an opener alongside Mitchell Marsh after the skipper’s poor IPL 2025. However, the keeper-batter didn’t show the required intent and suffered a dismissal via a run-out at the non-striker’s end. The Capitals kept striking at regular intervals and hardly let Lucknow settle in and go on to make a big total.
Abdul Samad dished out some big hits before perishing for 36 in 25 deliveries after holing out to David Miller at long-off. Their last three wickets fell for a mere three runs as Lungi Ngidi and T Natarajan finished with figures of 3.4-0-27-3 and 4-0-29-3, respectively. Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel also showcased their crafty work, sharing three scalps between them.
With all the matches before this won by the teams batting second, all the Capitals had to do was win the powerplay. But the Super Giants were in no mood to make it happen as Mohammed Shami, traded from the SunRisers Hyderabad, started by dismissing KL Rahul. Prince Yadav rocked the Capitals further by getting the better of Pathum Nissanka (1) and Axar Patel (0), while Mohsin Khan sent Nitish Rana packing for 15. At 30/4, the Super Giants fancied their chances.
But Sameer Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs shepherded the remainder of chase brilliantly. The 10th over bowled by Shahbaz Ahmed titled the contest significantly in Delhi’s favour as Rizvi collected three boundaries. The youngster raised his fifty in 37 deliveries and kept taking the attack to the opposition, while Stubbs played second fiddle for the most part. It was also fitting that Rizvi hit the winning runs, clobbering a six in the 18th over to finish off the game with six wickets and 17 balls to spare as the partnership stood at an unbroken 119*.
The right-handed batter’s unbeaten 70 deservedly earned the Player of the Match award too.
