Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek continued her stellar 2025 campaign by claiming her first career title at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati, defeating Italy’s Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 6-4 in a hard-fought final on Monday (August 18). The victory adds another prestigious WTA 1000 title to her growing collection and provides the perfect springboard heading into the US Open.
Swiatek, who had fallen at the semi-final stage in Cincinnati in both 2023 and 2024, initially looked vulnerable. She dropped the first three games of the match as Paolini came out firing. But the four-time Grand Slam champion quickly regrouped, responding with two breaks of serve to claw back the momentum and take a 5-3 lead.
Paolini wasn’t done, however. She broke back and saved a set point to level the score at 5-all. But Swiatek raised her level once again, breaking Paolini and sealing the first set 7-5 with a dominant love service game.
The second set was a rollercoaster, with both players trading breaks in the early stages. Paolini showed flashes of brilliance but couldn’t maintain her consistency in the key moments. Swiatek, in contrast, stayed composed when it mattered, saving two break points at 5-3 and then serving out the match two games later. The stats told the story, Swiatek converted six of her 10 break chances, while Paolini managed just two of six.
This win marks Swiatek’s 11th WTA 1000 title and 24th career title overall, putting her within striking distance of Serena Williams’ record of 13 WTA 1000 trophies. The 24-year-old also narrowed the gap in the WTA rankings, now trailing current world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka by just 500 points.
With back-to-back titles at Wimbledon and Cincinnati, Swiatek enters the US Open as the red-hot favorite and potentially just weeks away from reclaiming the top spot in the world.
