WWE has a long history of forming unexpected tag teams, and during the Attitude Era often seen as the golden age of tag team wrestling, one of the most surprising duos to find success was Kane and X-Pac. The powerhouse and the high-flyer first teamed up in 1999, quickly gaining fan support due to their chemistry and contrasting styles.
Despite doubts about their pairing, the duo clicked instantly and went on to win the WWE Tag Team Championship twice, competing in memorable matches against top teams of the era. Fans were drawn to their dynamic: Kane’s brute force balanced by X-Pac’s agility and charisma.
WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross, who was a lead commentator at the time, recently reflected on Kane and X-Pac’s run during an episode of his Grilling JR podcast. Even he admitted he wasn’t sold at first.
“I just didn’t feel it, but I was wrong,” Ross said. “Those two had chemistry, they respected each other it was a marriage made in heaven, unpredictable heaven, if nothing else.” He credited their success to mutual trust and shared passion. “It shows you how good Glenn Jacobs [Kane] was, and how much Sean (X-Pac) gave, athletically, to help it succeed.”
Despite the momentum they built, WWE ended the pairing in late 1999. During a match against the Dudley Boyz, X-Pac turned on Kane, abandoning him mid-match. Later that night, he attacked his former partner with D-Generation X, marking the start of their heated rivalry.
Though their team lasted less than a year, Kane and X-Pac became fan favorites and a highlight of the Attitude Era. Their partnership showed that storytelling and chemistry could turn even the unlikeliest duo into tag team gold.
