India and Sunrisers Hyderabad opener Abhishek Sharma is known for his aggressive batting and the left-hander has etched his name in the record books with yet another milestone. Abhishek has become the first Indian cricketer to hit 100 sixes in the IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The left-handed batter who was retained by the franchise now has 101 maximums to his name in 76 IPL matches played so far. Only one batter – David Warner – has scored more sixes for SRH in the IPL than Abhishek.
The Australian had played 95 matches for the team between 2014 to 2021 and hammered 143 maximums during this period. SRH’s only title win also came under Warner in 2016 when they defeated RCB in the finale.
The record for smashing maximums sixes for one team is held by Virat Kohli who has been a part of the franchise right from the beginning. He has hit 296 sixes in 268 IPL matches played so far for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Kohli is followed by Rohit Sharma who has smashed 257 sixes in 228 IPL matches for Mumbai Indians. Apart from Mumbai Indians, Rohit has played three seasons (2008 to 2010) in the IPL for Deccan Chargers.
Chris Gayle is next in the list with 239 maximums in 85 matches for RCB while AB de Villiers and MS Dhoni are the next two. Playing for RCB, de Villiers has scored 238 sixes in 156 while Dhoni has hit 234 maximums in 248 matches for CSK.
Coming to the match, KKR opted to bowl first. The first wicket stand between Travis Head (46 in 21 balls, with six fours and three sixes) and Abhishek (48 in 21 balls, with four boundaries and four sixes) started things for SRH, from where they slipped to 118/4.
Heinrich Klaasen (52 in 35 balls, with four boundaries and a six) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (39 in 24 balls, with four boundaries and a six) put on an 82-run stand for the fifth wicket and took SRH to 226/8 in 20 overs.
Blessing Muzarabani (4/41) was the pick of the bowlers for KKR, while Vaibhav Arora (2/47), Kartik Tyagi (1/48) and Anukul Roy (1/16) were also among the wickets.
“Travis Head and Abhishek played a beautiful knock out there and, you know, getting those all 80 runs in the powerplay made the game easy for us because I think every batter got that extra time to take singles and understand how the pitch is playing. So, to be very honest, I give credit to both the batters and Klassy taking it to the end, Nitish playing a lovely knock. So, it was overall a team effort,” stand-in skipper Ishan Kishan said after the match.
