Shawn Michaels is no stranger to headline-making quotes, and in a recent interview with Undisputed’s Justin Barrasso, he made another bold claim: “I’d be lying if I didn’t think we have the best two-hour show on television. And the most exciting.”
As WWE’s Senior VP of Talent Development Creative, Michaels is the driving force behind NXT’s direction and clearly believes Tuesday nights on The CW deliver unmatched entertainment, even when compared to AEW Dynamite, Collision, or SmackDown.
Michaels credits the charisma and consistency of performers like Ethan Page and Chelsea Green as part of what makes NXT stand out. “They’re two of the most enjoyable people that I watch on television,” he said, highlighting their work ethic and versatility. While Chelsea Green isn’t featured weekly, her presence when it happens is memorable. Ethan Page, reportedly a favorite for The CW audience, seems poised to be a regular fixture.
But the magic, according to Michaels, lies deeper. “Our success comes down to the athletes that walk through the doors of the Performance Center every day in Orlando,” he said, praising the NXT coaching staff, creative minds, and production team. It’s a nod to the developmental foundation WWE continues to invest in.
NXT’s backstage infrastructure has evolved into a well-oiled machine under Michaels’ leadership. From in-ring development to character work, the Performance Center serves as the heartbeat of WWE’s future. Michaels credits the show’s energy to the “hungry and passionate” athletes grinding to earn their main roster shot a dynamic that adds authenticity to NXT’s storytelling.
Michaels also points to WWE’s new partnership with The CW as a game-changer. It’s a high-profile platform that brings more eyes to NXT, alongside collaborative efforts with promotions like NOAH, TNA, and AAA. However, some fans feel these partnerships have made NXT’s weekly storytelling a bit cluttered, especially with unfamiliar talent suddenly inserted into ongoing arcs.
The NXT men’s title scene has also drawn criticism for lacking punch, despite the influx of talent. But love it or leave it, NXT is making moves and Michaels is proudly leading the charge.
