The New York Yankees put on an unforgettable power display Tuesday (August 19) night, blasting nine home runs in a dominant 13-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. Though they tied their own franchise record, the Yankees fell just one homer short of tying the MLB all-time single-game record of 10, set by the 1987 Blue Jays.
The onslaught began immediately in the top of the first inning, as Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Giancarlo Stanton launched back-to-back-to-back homers off Rays starter Shane Baz, giving New York an early 3-0 lead. That trio set the tone for what would become a historic night at the plate. Bellinger went 4-for-5 with two home runs, while Stanton matched him with two homers and four RBIs. Judge added his 40th homer of the season, reinforcing his MVP-level campaign.
The Yankees matched the team record for home runs in a single game, previously set during a 20-9 win over Milwaukee on March 29. Tuesday’s performance included long balls from Jose Caballero (2), Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Ben Rice, rounding out the nine-homer explosion. Despite the fireworks, they came up one short of the MLB record of 10, but improved to 4-0 on their five-game road trip.
On the mound, Carlos Rodón (13-7) held the Rays to two runs over six innings, striking out five. Baz (8-10) struggled mightily, giving up five homers in three innings.
Former Ray Jose Caballero made a triumphant return, honored with a tribute video before crushing two home runs including a two-run shot in the second inning. While Nick Fortes, Chandler Simpson, and Jake Mangum drove in runs for Tampa Bay, it wasn’t nearly enough. The Yankees overwhelmed the Rays with raw power, reminding everyone why they’re still baseball’s most feared lineup.
