Google has introduced a new update that allows users to change their Gmail address without creating a new account. Earlier, once you created an email ID, it could not be changed. But now, with this new feature, you can choose a new email address while keeping your same account, data, and settings.

Google has introduced a new feature that lets users change their Gmail address. The company had been working on this update since last year, and it is now being rolled out to users. 

Google CEO Sundar Pichai also shared this update on X, saying that “2004 was a good year, but your Gmail address doesn’t need to be stuck in it.”

How to Change Your Gmail Address Without Losing Your Account?

If you want to use this feature, you can change your Gmail address without creating a new account. Just go to the Gmail settings and pick a new email address that is available.

Sundar Pichai also said that users can finally get rid of old or outdated email IDs and choose a better name through their Google Account settings.

However, this feature is currently available only to a limited number of users. 

What Happens to Old Email? 

After you change your Gmail address, people can start sending emails to your new address. However, you old email ID will still stay connected to your account. No one else will be able to use it, and people who don’t know your new address can still send emails to the old one. 

All emails sent to both your old and new addresses will come to the same inbox.

Is Google Gmail’s New Feature Available in India? 

Even though this feature is useful, it does have some limits. Right now, it is only available to user in the United States, and there is no clear information on when it will be available worldwide.

Also, you can change your Gmail address only once every 12 months. So, after making a change, you will have to wait a year before changing it again or creating another Gmail username. 

There are also some restrictions on deleting the new email address, and not everyone may see this option, as it depends on the type of account they have.
