Kerala: South Indian Bank enters World Book of Records for '101 Oonjals'

The staging and swinging of the highest 101 exquisitely painted oonjals or jhoolas by South Indian Bank in Kochi set a world record.

The South Indian Bank arranged the “Onnichirikkam Oonjaladam” event on Sunday and received recognition for “staging and swinging 101 Oonjals” by the World Book of Records. People came out in huge numbers to the event “Onnichirikkam Oonjaladam” to commemorate peace and prosperity during the current festival season. Swings were traditionally constructed of wood and rope.

Yesterday in Kochi, South Indian Bank conducted a first-of-its-kind category event called “Staging and Swinging 101 Oonjals” at the same time.

Officials from South Indian Bank received the Award from the World Book of Records team.

Murali Ramakrishnan, MD and CEO of the South Indian Bank, stated to the media agency, “Due to modern technology and other factors, I believe that people have forgotten the true joy that you all experienced while swinging in your younger years.

As a result, South Indian Bank, a bank with a rich history and culture, decided that now would be a wonderful time to join this community and restore the genuine joy that all of us are currently experiencing. In essence, this is an attempt to recapture the unadulterated delight that may be had by simply playing on a swing.”

“The record stands here. The public organised and used all 101 swings at once. The celebration was filled with joy and camaraderie. We are all inherently happy when we see everyone participating in something together. So, I’d suggest that when people from different backgrounds come together, experience the joy of being together, and appreciate that moment “said Murali Ramakrishnan.

An Oonjal is a substantial rectangular plank that hangs from iron link chains that are fastened to the balcony or hall ceiling. Oonjals are used in a rite during a particular sector of Tamil Nadu’s weddings. The swinging custom is a crucial component of Onam celebrations in Kerala.
