With tensions mounting in the Middle East, the authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have strongly disapproved viral reports that Iran had targeted an Oracle data centre in Dubai. The reports came at a time when Iran was increasing its assault on US and Israeli-related interests in the region. Nevertheless, Dubai authorities were fast to refute the allegations, terming them unfounded and deceptive. The explanation is timely considering the misinformation that is fast proliferating in line with actual happenings in the current war.

Iran Striking Oracle Data Center In Dubai, UAE Says ‘It Is…’

The Dubai Government Media Office made a highly vocal refutation on social media, saying that claims having been made that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had or attempted an attack on Dubai were fake news and had no factual foundation. The office even released screenshots of circulating reports, which were obviously labeled false. Governments encourage people, and the rest of the world to trust confirmed government sources only when updating information, as the geopolitical atmosphere is especially tense, and there is a threat of panic due to unproven information. The rumours were catalyzed by the Iranian media who alleged that the IRGC had attacked data centres of key US technology companies such as Oracle in Dubai and Amazon in Bahrain. This was put forward as part of a larger retaliatory effort against American businesses after US-Israeli attacks on Iranian infrastructure. Tehran previously threatened that various US based technology companies with operations in the country might be targeted in the future, reflecting the increased importance of the online infrastructure in contemporary warfare.

The scenario highlights the critical role of data centres in geopolitical disputes especially with the emergence of artificial intelligence and the ability to wage digital warfare. Although Iran has boasted of attacking such infrastructure, there is no proven fact that the Oracle facility in Dubai was attacked. Rather, analysts say that these assertions might be one part of a broader policy of psychological and economic coercion of US partners in the Gulf. With tensions still escalating, the authorities in the UAE have once again called on people to verify information and not to pass rumours that may fuel fears in an already tense region.
