India, China Commit to Peace: Border Talks, Trade And Flights To Resume As PM Modi Meets Wang Yi

India and China on Tuesday agreed to revive dialogue mechanisms, resume direct flights, and enhance trade and investment flows. The reports of these confidence-building measures between the two countries amid the visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to India

These measures signal a potential reset in relations between the two countries, which have remained strained since the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes.

China, India Commit to Peace on Borders

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that both countries would work together to “maintain peace and tranquillity in the border areas through friendly consultations” while addressing each other’s concerns.

The two sides also concluded the 24th round of Special Representatives’ talks on the boundary issue in New Delhi. The talks were co-chaired by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

The MEA added that India and China have agreed to reopen border trade at three designated points. Both sides also committed to reviving various dialogue mechanisms and exchanges aimed at strengthening cooperation and addressing mutual concerns.

Wang Yi Meets PM Modi, EAM Jaishankar and NSA Ajit Doval

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in New Delhi on Tuesday following Wang’s earlier discussions with NSA Ajit Doval. Modi had also met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday.

In a post on X, Modi said that since his talks with President Xi Jinping in Kazan last year, India-China relations have made “steady progress guided by respect for each other’s interests and sensitivities.” He added that stable and constructive India-China ties are vital for regional and global peace, and expressed his intention to meet Xi on the margins of the upcoming SCO summit in Tianjin.

Wang Yi Conveys Xi Jinping’s Message To PM Modi

Wang Yi, who arrived in Delhi on Monday, conveyed a message and an invitation from President Xi to Modi for the SCO summit. Shortly after his arrival, Wang held talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

As the meeting began, Jaishankar said, in remarks broadcast publicly, “having seen a difficult period in our relationship…our two nations now seek to move ahead. This requires a candid and constructive approach from both sides.”

He added, “in that endeavour, we must be guided by the three mutuals – mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest. Differences must not become disputes, nor competition conflict,” reiterating the stance he had articulated during his visit to China in July for the SCO foreign ministers’ meeting.
