With Iran, the US and Israel continuing their conflict and the Iranian media claiming that a US jet was shot by Iranian troops and with a US pilot being ejected, the conflict has taken yet another major shift.
The report was provided by the Iranian state-owned television which claimed the aircraft was downed near Kamyaran, Iran, during a day of military actions in that region of the country; however, the US has not confirmed this and no official from the US has provided a public response as yet.
Iranian Broadcast Makes Dramatic Appeal
National Iranian TV makes a dramatic pan to the streets of Iran, calls upon them to treat “enemy pilot.” The TV anchor made a public announcement to all citizens to “capture enemy pilot or pilots alive and turn them into police and receive a valuable prize” for doing so.
According to reports, on another Iranian television channel, a text message was displayed on the screen stating “shoot them as soon as you see them,” referring to what the Iranian television characterized as enemy pilots, without providing further detail or evidence to support these allegations. As a result of this statement/claim, many citizens are likely to have uncertainty about the authenticity of the incident.
War Enters Critical Phase With Rising Casualties
The resumption of air battles has led to a number of conflicting claims disputing whether or not either party has been able to verify the validity of those claims. The Iranian press has made a number of statements that they have shot down US military fighter aircraft, including the F-35 stealth fighter, but they have not provided independent verification of their assertions.
Reports say that Iranian media have reported a second incidence of an Iranian F-35 being shot down recently with the suggestion that the pilot has no chance for survival; however, US government officials have again failed to confirm the reports leaving much uncertainty surrounding events transpiring in the airspace of Iran.
War Enters Critical Phase With Rising Casualties
The events reported above are part of a larger pattern of increased violence throughout the region and a new phase of violence; now almost five full weeks have also occurred since combat operations began. Fighting now represents a much broader scope of activity than simply an engagement of Iran versus US Military forces with strikes against regional Gulf countries attacking key resource capabilities, including an oil refinery and a sea water desalination plant in Kuwait.
The war’s toll on humanity continues to be massive. Reports state that more than 1,900 Iranians have died and at least 13 US military personnel have also been lost. Hundreds have died in Lebanon and over a million have fled due to continuing violence.
Worldwide Consequences Of The West Asia War Have Led To Increasing Estrangement
The conflict extends beyond military action into international energy resources, including global politics. Rising oil prices, now more than 50% higher than what they were before the conflict started, have created rising concern about possible disruption of transportation routes in the Strait of Hormuz, which is critical to distributing oil globally.
At the diplomatic level, there are ongoing, active diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation of the situation. The United Nations Security Council will be discussing international enforcement of maritime channels in the region; however, there are major power differences on this issue that may impede joint action.
Global interests are uncertain and will continue to be watched carefully.
There is still no confirmed evidence that a U.S. pilot is missing or that such an aircraft has crashed. Given the history of prior claims being refuted or changed by both sides, it may be difficult to separate out national propaganda from fact.
