US President Donald Trump has indicated that the United States could withdraw its forces from Iran “pretty quickly,” while leaving the door open for targeted strikes if required in the future. His remarks come amid ongoing tensions in the region and just ahead of a planned address to the American public on the state of the conflict.
Trump Signals Possible Quick Withdrawal And Future Action
Speaking to Reuters, Trump said he could not give a precise timeline for when the conflict would end, but insisted that the US presence in the region would not last long. He added that the situation could change depending on developments on the ground.
According to him, US involvement has already ensured that Iran is unable to develop a nuclear weapon. He suggested that once the immediate objective is met, American forces could be withdrawn, though the option of returning for “spot hits” would remain if necessary.
Trump also repeated that he is seriously considering pulling the US out of NATO, a statement that has added to the broader debate around his foreign policy approach.
Comments On Iran And Ceasefire Conditions
Earlier in the day, Trump described Iran’s president as “less radicalised” and “more intelligent” than previous leadership, while claiming that Tehran is interested in a ceasefire. However, he added that any truce would depend on the Strait of Hormuz being “open, free, and clear.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded to the situation by stating that the Strait of Hormuz lies within the territorial waters of Iran and Oman and remains subject to strategic control.
He said that the passage would be restricted for countries involved in hostilities against Iran, adding that such measures are normal during wartime. He also noted that some nations have already engaged in discussions with Iran regarding passage through the strait, while others are avoiding it due to rising insurance costs and security concerns.
In a separate interview with Al Jazeera, Araghchi made it clear that Iran is prepared to continue its stance. He said the country cannot be pressured through threats or deadlines and emphasized that Tehran would defend itself without setting any timeline for resolution.
Rising tensions and military buildup
The conflict, which began on February 28, has seen shifting positions from the US administration, with repeated statements suggesting both an early end and the possibility of escalation. At the same time, thousands of additional US troops are being deployed to the Middle East, raising further questions about Washington’s next steps in the region.
