A dramatic and unusual weather event happened recently in the areas of southern Europe and North Africa with the sky changing a strange color of blood red and causing a lot of panic on the Internet. The strange metamorphosis was observed in such countries as Greece, Libya, and Egypt, where masses of dust covered cities and filtered the sunlight in the shades of deep crimson. The images, which went viral on social media, depicted streets and buildings illuminated by an orange red, and gave the impression of an almost bizarre and disturbing sense of apocalyptic that many people referred to as the end of the world.

The phenomenon was associated with an intense storm system that deposited high volumes of dust in the Sahara Desert to the Mediterranean area. It is very rare and only happens when the strong winds pick up fine sand and particles and carry them a great distance into the atmosphere. When sunlight passes through these thick layers of dust, shorter wavelengths are scattered off and this gives way to the domination of red and orange colors in the sky. This is a natural process which despite its scientific explanations can produce images that would be perceived as dramatic and unknown to the population.

Australia With Blood-Red Sky

Remarkably, just a few days ago the same scenes were also reported in sections of Australia where a dust storm caused by a cyclone had resulted in the skies turning dark red. Iron containing dusts were also important in enhancing the color of the sky in both instances. According to experts, such dramatic effects could be achieved due to the joint influence of dry ground conditions, high winds, and a special structure of the soil. Although such events might appear frightening, they are not unusual in areas vulnerable to dust storms and do not portray any supernatural or disastrous phenomenon.

Nevertheless, the visuals rapidly went viral despite scientific explanations, causing a surge of responses on social media sites. Numerous users were shocked and even compared the scenes to doomsday or end of the world images, other people were just amazed by the uncommon spectacle. Nevertheless, meteorologists called on the population not to panic and noted that the red skies are a natural phenomenon in the atmosphere. The event helps to remember that weather systems are so powerful that they can produce striking but disturbing images that will draw the attention of the world in a few seconds.
