The new lawsuit against Sam Altman, the CEO of Open AI, has emerged with his sister, Annie Altman, claiming in an amended lawsuit that he sexually abused her over 20 years ago. The new complaint follows the earlier dismissal of her previous lawsuit by a federal judge in the US, in January 2025, who ruled that it was too late, as it was beyond the statute of limitations. Annie has since re filed the case under Missouri law, which does permit some exceptions in cases of alleged childhood abuse.
In the reformed complaint, Annie Altman accuses that the mistreatment occurred between 1997 and 2006 at their family house in Clayton, Missouri. She states that the events started when she was only three years old, and Sam Altman was 12 years old at that point. The lawsuit incorporates severe charges, indicating that the maltreatment took place severally over a number of years. The court has enabled the amended filing to be subjected to first consideration even though it has not ruled on the merits of the case yet.
Sam Altman has vehemently refuted all the charges. In previous court documents, he termed the allegations as untrue and he termed the suit as an extortion effort. He has also expressed his concern about the mental health of his sister, which a statement by the Altman family published in 2025 has reiterated. In the same quote, the family showed their concern about Annie, claiming that she has had difficulties with her mental health and that they provide financial help to her. The lawsuit has not only been limited to the abuse charges. In March 2025, Sam Altman countersued Annie on defamation grounds, stating that her statements have affected his reputation negatively and inflicted emotional distress on him. Although the Missouri law offers an avenue through which some historical abuse claims can be reviewed, according to legal experts, the court has to first provide whether the case satisfies certain statutory requirements before taking the next step. Currently, the case is still in the court of law and a verdict has not been arrived at.
