In the wake of a series of targeted killings in the Union Territory, Union Home Minister Amit Shah attended a high-level security review meeting on Jammu and Kashmir on Friday.
According to government sources, the marathon discussion lasted about three hours and covered current security procedures as well as preparations for the Amarnath Yatra. The Home Minister took stock of security situations in the Valley in the first session, while the second session focused on Amarnath Yatra preparations, as the annual pilgrimage is set to begin on June 30 after a two-year sabbatical.
The conference was attended by Kuldeep Singh, Director-General of the Central Reserve Police Force, Pankaj Singh, Director-General of the Border Security Force, Dilbagh Singh, and other senior officials from Jammu and Kashmir.
The conference came after militants carried out a series of targeted killings in the Kashmir Valley that include non-Muslims, security officers, an artist and local people.
The conference was convened after two civilians and three security officers, all Kashmiri Hindus, were slain in the month of May. Kashmiri Pandits in Jammu and Kashmir are organising rallies in Srinagar against the killings by terrorists.
Two people were slain in Kashmir on Thursday, one a bank employee and the other a brick kiln labourer, in two different incidents.
In an attack in Magraypora village in the Chadoora area of Budgam, Jammu & Kashmir, terrorists murdered one labourer and injured another.
Terrorists shot and killed Rajni Bala, a 36-year-old migrant Kashmiri Pandit and high school teacher, in the Kulgam area of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.
Two civilians, including Kashmiri Pandit employee Rahul Bhat, and three off-duty cops were assassinated by militants in Kashmir earlier this month.
Earlier on May 17, Shah reviewed the security preparedness for the Amarnath Yatra, which is a difficult task given that Jammu and Kashmir has seen several incidents of targeted killings by terrorists in recent months, prompting the Ministry of Home Affairs to ask security agencies operating in the state to step up counter-terror operations.
