Assam grants industry status to tourism sector

The Assam State Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, supported the request for the provision of Industrial status to the tourist industry in Assam on Monday since the expansion of the sector is essential for socioeconomic development in state.

Jayanta Mallabaruah, the minister of tourism for Assam, emphasised that given the current state of the sector, new investments in long-term infrastructure will hasten the creation of jobs, the formation of public-private partnerships, and the improvement of physical infrastructure.

Jayanta Malla Baruah further added “Restaurants, cafeterias, health clubs, spas, and wellness centres among others are now eligible for subsidies under the industrial strategy as a result of the tourist industry being given industry status. This action would promote and increase private investment in the aforementioned tourism-related regions.”

He said that prior to this time, State Industrial Policy did not include the tourist industry.

“The tourist industry will undergo a paradigm shift as a result of this choice. Prior to this, the emphasis sectors of Assam Industrial Policy only covered hotels and resorts with more than three stars and river cruises. The focus sectors of the industrial policy will now include a large number of new tourist units, such as heritage hotels, bungalows, camping grounds, restaurants, amusement parks, ropeways, museums, tour operator services, adventure parks, water sports, etc “said Mallabaruah.

Along with capital production and the provision of meaningful employment, the recently approved policy strives for ecologically responsible and sustainable investment.

The minister said that a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model might be used to improve the infrastructure, aiding in the overall growth of the area.

He continued “The new status gained which permits incentives, subsidies, reimbursements among others as per industry policy for the investors and ultimately these investments will create new job possibilities. Assam tourist sector will get a sufficient quantity of private investments.”

Due to its distinctive fauna, biodiversity, and experience of an undiscovered wonderland, Assam has already established itself as a highly regarded national and international all-season tourist destination.
