The suspect was armed and wearing body armour, and authorities believe he was livestreaming the shooting. They're looking into whether the shooting was racially motivated
When a gunman opened fire at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, on Saturday afternoon, many people were injured, and at least ten of them died. The alleged shooter has been apprehended, according to police. According to law enforcement authorities quoted by the Associated Press, the gunman was armed with a rifle and wearing body armour. Tops Friendly Market was the scene of the event. According to the report, details on the number of more people shot at and their conditions were not immediately available.
An official told the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity that the man may have been livestreaming the shooting and that they were investigating whether he had posted a manifesto online. The official wanted to emphasise that the inquiry was still in its early stages and that no clear motive had been established. He did say, though, that they were looking into whether the shooting was ethnically motivated.
Governor Kathy Hochul said she was “closely monitoring the shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo,” her hometown, on Twitter.
The grocery is located in a predominantly Black neighbourhood about 5 kilometres north of downtown Buffalo, in a primarily residential area. According to the AP report, the store is between a Family Dollar store and a fire station.
Buffalo police said the gunman was in arrest in a tweet, but did not identify him.
According to witnesses, the gunman was dressed in “military-style attire” in addition to the body armour.
Residents Braedyn Kephart and Shane Hill described the shooter as a Caucasian person in his late teens or early twenties who had drove into the parking lot when he was exiting. According to the allegation, he was dressed in full camo, wearing a black helmet, and carrying what seemed to be a gun.
“With the rifle to his chin, he stood there.” What the hell was going on, we wondered. Why is this youngster holding a gun to his head?” According to Kephart. He sank to his knees as the cops arrived, “took off his helmet, dropped his rifle, and was tackled by the cops.”
